How it's made: Remote Power Unit.

March 22, 2018

On the 15th March 2018, Winch Energy welcomed 30 delegates from the ARE 4th Energy Access Investment Forum to their RPU manufacturing facility in Sicily.

The annual ARE Forum has become the key milestone event in spring where the clean energy off-grid sector gathers together to learn more about upcoming new support schemes and initiatives by the public sector as well as the latest industry trends, products and service innovations from the private sector.

The delegation arrived at the site, broke the ice with a brief safety induction, and set off into the factory. Guests followed the complete process of how Winch manufacture the RPU’s, starting with the plasma cutting of steel for the container walls and profiles. The tour then displayed all steps in between such as the robotics used for welding, construction of the bespoke container decking that supports large weights of batteries, and the painting and protection methods used against corrosion. The tour concluded in the final assembly room for internal components within the RPU.

After the factory tour, attendees were then able to see two fully, complete and erected 30kW RPU’s setup on the grounds of the facility. Visitors could observe the external solar canopy and walk around the inside of the container. They were also able to learn about our design process and talk with Winch engineers who have been involved in this process from conception. This was followed by a Q&A with Winch Energy’s CTO, Rino Magazu.

“The visit to our facility has given Winch the opportunity to show some of the key technical development drivers for the RPU. The current design is the result of three years of design and development, taking into account the hurdles and challenges of the off-grid markets harsh environment, whilst striving to continually improve” Rino Magazu

The site visit showcased the unique design features of the RPU that ensure the equipment reaches its design lifespan of 25 years, minimising operational costs, which is vital for sustainable mini-grids. The RPU also demonstrated its robustness, ease of on-site installation and conformity to international standards.

Winch Energy would like to thank all delegates who attended the site visit and we hope to see you at future events.
